Orthopedic SEO vs Google Ads: Choose Your Marketing Scope

For an orthopedic practice owner comparing SEO and Google Ads, the first decision is which service, surgeon and office need support. A group can have strong name recognition and weak visibility for a particular specialty. It can also have plenty of website visits while appointment requests go unanswered. Those situations need different scopes.

Considering ongoing marketing support? I run orthopedic marketing agency services for practices like yours. I can discuss your priorities and possible scope. Fees, responsibilities, account access and handover terms are defined in a written proposal. Request a marketing review

This guide helps you decide what to ask a supplier to investigate before approving organic search work, paid search or a combined engagement. For the broader service, see orthopedic marketing for practice owners and groups.

SEO and Google Ads solve different parts of the search journey

SEO concerns how your website can be discovered and understood in unpaid search results. Google Ads buys advertising placements through a separate system. Google explains that paying for advertising does not improve organic rankings. Neither channel establishes whether a person needs treatment or will become a patient.

Google’s SEO Starter Guide explains that changes can take different amounts of time to appear and that improvements do not guarantee a particular ranking. A paid campaign can provide a controlled way to test an approved message and destination, but receiving clicks is different from demonstrating useful enquiries.

Use the practice’s bottleneck to choose an initial scope

Questions to settle before selecting a channel
Observed situationWork to investigate firstEvidence needed before expansion
A specialty page appears for relevant searches but few visitors take the next step.Review the title, page content, location information and contact route within the existing SEO scope.Relevant query and page data, approved service details and a usable enquiry path.
The practice wants to test demand for an existing service at a specific office.Assess a bounded paid-search test alongside the destination page and reception process.Approved geography, campaign allowance, service availability and a defined enquiry outcome.
A new surgeon’s information is incomplete across the website.Correct the clinician, specialty and location relationships before paying to promote them.Verified biography, actual consulting locations, review owner and working appointment instructions.
Calls and forms reach the wrong office or cannot be reconciled.Repair routing and measurement before making a larger channel commitment.A documented route to reception and agreed distinctions between clicks, enquiries and bookings.

These are proposed decision rules, not claims that one channel will outperform the other. A shoulder service at one office and a joint replacement service at another may need separate decisions. Use the multi-location orthopedic group guide to assign office and central responsibilities.

Ask for comparable deliverables rather than a package label

An SEO proposal should name the affected pages, search needs, technical findings and planned changes. It should distinguish work on existing surgeon, specialty and location pages from genuinely new content. Ask who verifies factual information and who approves clinical statements. Our orthopedic SEO service explains the assessment and implementation scope.

A Google Ads proposal should identify campaign geography, intended search scope, exclusions, landing pages, review responsibilities and spending authority. Separate media paid to Google from management, development and software. Ask how budget changes are approved; an average daily budget should not be described as a fixed daily bill. Refer to Google’s budget guidance when reviewing the controls.

For either option, record access requirements, deliverables, exclusions and acceptance checks. A supplier promising a content count or campaign launch has described activity. You also need to know which practice problem that activity addresses. The orthopedic Google Ads scope and cost guide provides a paid-search proposal worksheet.

When a combined engagement has a clear purpose

A combined scope can make sense when the channels have distinct jobs: improve an existing service page and test an approved paid-search message leading to it, for example. Name the shared dependencies so the same page work or measurement setup is not billed twice without explanation.

Keep paid and organic observations separate. A searcher may encounter several sources before contacting reception. An enquiry attributed to an advertisement is not automatically additional demand caused by that advertisement, and growth in searches for the practice name does not prove an SEO supplier created it.

Agree review rules before the work begins

Record the starting dates, priority pages, relevant query groups and available enquiry records. Define received enquiries, qualified enquiries, booked appointments and attended appointments separately. Remove tests, spam and duplicates consistently. Use aggregate records appropriate to the review; patient information does not belong in a public marketing enquiry.

  • Repair first: a confirmed broken destination, routing failure or inaccurate service statement needs correction before judging channel performance.
  • Continue within scope: delivery checks pass, approved spending remains within the agreed controls and the evidence supports further observation.
  • Reassess: attribution is incomplete, the office cannot support the promoted service, or the agreed review question cannot be answered from the available records.
  • Expand only by approval: document the evidence, additional work, dependencies and spending authority before adding locations or services.

Agree review dates around the actual implementation and available data. A quiet week alone does not establish failure, and an increase in clicks alone does not establish profitable patient acquisition.

Discuss the decision for your orthopedic group

Bring your public website, priority service, office locations and the business problem you want addressed. Sprout Sage Solutions can discuss a possible scope and the evidence needed to choose the next step. Fees, responsibilities and implementation commitments are agreed in writing.
