Meniscus Surgery Cost: Repair vs Meniscectomy Priced Out
Arthroscopic meniscus surgery in the United States commonly bills between est. $8,000 and est. $25,000 in total. Which end you land on depends mostly on two things: whether the meniscus is repaired or trimmed, and where the operation happens.
Costs vary by region, insurer and facility, and nothing here is medical or financial advice. If you run an orthopedic or sports medicine practice, the last section is for you.
Repair and meniscectomy are not the same bill
A meniscectomy trims the damaged portion away. It is quicker, uses no implants, and sits at the lower end of the range.
A meniscus repair stitches the tear so the tissue can heal. It takes longer, uses suture implants, and bills higher.
The recovery difference is larger than the price difference. A trim often means walking normally within weeks. A repair commonly means restricted weight bearing and a brace for six weeks or more, which carries its own costs in lost work and additional therapy.
Younger patients are more often candidates for repair, because preserving the meniscus protects the knee long term. That is a clinical judgment, not a budget one.
The facility spread
This is the line that decides your total. According to the federal hospital price transparency files that hospitals must now publish, negotiated rates for the same knee arthroscopy codes routinely differ by more than est. $10,000 between two hospitals in one city.
Meniscus surgery is almost always outpatient, so an ambulatory surgery center is usually genuinely available to you. Ask.
The rest of the bill
The surgeon’s fee. Commonly est. $1,500 to est. $4,500. The number patients are quoted and the smallest part of the total.
Anesthesia. Usually est. $600 to est. $1,800, billed by a group that may have different network contracts from your surgeon.
Implants. Only relevant for a repair. Suture devices are consumables and the count is not known until the surgeon is inside the knee.
Physical therapy. A trim might need a handful of visits. A repair commonly needs twenty or more at est. $75 to est. $250 each, which is a material cost nobody includes in a surgical estimate.
Insured versus self-pay
In network, you pay deductible plus coinsurance to your out-of-pocket maximum. For many 2026 commercial plans that lands the episode somewhere between est. $1,500 and est. $7,000.
Bundled self-pay quotes at surgery centers commonly sit between est. $5,500 and est. $12,000 for a meniscectomy and higher for a repair. On a high-deductible plan the cash price occasionally beats running it through insurance, so ask for both numbers.
What to ask before you schedule
Ask whether the plan is a repair or a trim and what changes the answer during surgery. Ask what the price is under each scenario. Ask whether a surgery center is an option and what the facility fee is at each. Ask how many therapy visits each path typically needs. Ask for the anesthesia group’s name and verify its network status separately.
What this means if you run a sports medicine or orthopedic practice
Meniscus is one of the highest-volume searches in orthopedics, and it brings a wide mix: a fifty-year-old with a degenerative tear and a twenty-year-old athlete are both typing the same words.
I audited a practice site last year that had a thorough page on meniscus anatomy and rehab and not one line about cost. The front desk fielded price calls daily with no script, and the practice had no idea how many callers it lost.
Cost content does not mean publishing your fee schedule.
It means explaining the repair versus trim difference, naming the facility question, giving honest ranges labelled as estimates, and being specific about the therapy tail. That page ranks for the search people actually run and it shortens the call your staff is already having.
There is a second reason to write it here specifically. Meniscus is a procedure where the honest answer is sometimes that surgery may not be the best first step for certain degenerative tears. A practice willing to say that in writing builds more trust than one that does not, and it attracts exactly the patient who was quietly worried about being oversold.
The full economics are in my orthopedic practice marketing cost breakdown, and the closest sports medicine comparison is ACL reconstruction cost.
This page is general information about typical costs, not medical or financial advice. Surgical decisions belong with you and a licensed provider, and specific pricing belongs with your surgeon’s office and your insurer.
